Do I need a visa to travel to Ghana?

If you are a National of one of the listed countries under the “Exempted Countries” list below, you do not need a visa otherwise you require a visa to travel to Ghana.

  • Citizens from ECOWAS States by virtue of The Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, the Right of Residence and Establishment (PROTOCOL A/P1/5/79); Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte D’Ivoire, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo.
  • Holders of Diplomatic, Service or Official Passports. Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, Iran, Namibia. NB: Exemptions Category B above shall be for a period not exceeding ninety (90) days from date of entry.
  • All nationals of the following countries: Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Singapore, **South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Zimbabwe.

**Children with ordinary passports accompanying holders of diplomatic, service or official passports accredited to Ghana or South Africa are exempt from entry visa requirements.

What type of Visa should I apply for?

  • Transit Visa – If you are connecting flights to another destination and do not intend to enter Ghana.
  • Single Entry Visa – If you intend to enter Ghana once within the Visa validity period.
  • Multiple Entry Visa – If you intend to enter Ghana multiple times within the Visa validity period.

Am I required to apply for a visa in person?

Individuals aged between 14 and 79 are required to apply for a visa in person. Applicants who are under 14 and 80 and over or groups of more than three persons may apply through a nominated person with whom they are travelling.

What documents are required when applying for a visa?

Documents vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. Please visit our Visa Application page or see notes on the application form for more information.

What is the processing time for my application?

Visa applications take between 10 to 15 working days from the start to finish. Applicants are advised to submit Visa Applications at least 1 (one) month before the intended date of travel.

What is the shortest Ghana Visa duration I can obtain if I want to enter Ghana?

The three month Single Entry Visa.

Can I apply for Visa On Arrival in Ghana?

This Visa policy is primarily to cater for visitors/business people who travel at short notice from countries where Ghana has no mission or consulate or where a visa cannot or could not be obtained at short notice. If your circumstances qualify you for this Visa, then you can apply. Please note however that airlines my refuse to carry you unless you have evidence of a prior approval for the Visa on arrival.

Does the visa issued indicate the duration of stay in Ghana?

An Entry Visa will be issued to you but your duration of stay is determined by an Immigration Officer at your port of entry to Ghana.

Can I apply for a visa if my passport is valid for less than six months?

In special circumstances, yes. Please note however that some airlines may refuse to carry you unless you have more than six months on your passport so do check with your airline.

Can I use a valid visa in an expired passport?

Visas would ordinarily not be issued beyond the expiry date of your passport. If for some reason this happens, you can travel with your old passport provided you also have a new passport with you.

How many pages are required in a passport if travelling with a valid visa?

The Ghana Immigration Service recommends having at least one (1) blank page in your passport for the entry clearance stamp.

Are travel certificates or documents valid for travel to Ghana?

If the travel certificate or document states your nationality (if any) and is valid for travel to Ghana and return to the country of issuance, you may present it in support of a visa application.

Can my child travel on any of his/her parent’s passports?

No. You and your child will require individual passports. Please note that you will also be required to complete a visa application and pay application fees for both you and your child.

I have completed the application but I am unable to submit it through the ``Register Application`` button.

You have most likely completed the PDF form in a browser window. The PDF form should be downloaded onto your computer, and opened using Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can download and install a free version of Adobe by clicking here.

I have submitted my application and uploaded all my supporting documents, what is next?

The Consulate in touch regarding their decision and require you to submit your passport for the Visa if your application is successful.

How do I make an appointment to submit my application?

The Visa application process is entirely online. You would receive an appointment invitation to submit your passport only when your application has been successful.

I am running late for an appointment what can I do?

Please inform the Consulate as soon as they are able to. Alternatively, you may want to re-arrange the appointment for another date.

I have made errors on my visa forms, how can I amend it?

Alert the Consulate to any errors and you will be guided as to how to make any corrections.

I missed my appointment what can I do?

Applicants who miss their appointments can request to schedule a new appointment by contacting the Consulate and requesting for a new appointment (subject to availability).

I have an emergency, how can I schedule an appointment?

You may contact the Consulate and request an appointment for an expedited application processing if you have an urgent medical or humanitarian need for travel. Please note that appointments are only available as the schedule of the Honourary Consul and her staff  permit.

Are vaccinations required for travel to Ghana?

Yes you require evidence of Yellow Fever vaccination. Please note that the World Health Organisation advises that vaccinations are now effective for life and therefore you only need to be vaccinated once.

My appointment for the Yellow Fellow vaccination is after my Visa Appointment.

You can show evidence of the vaccination appointment at the Visa Appointment. You must however submit a copy to the Consulate as soon as you receive it. You must also ensure that vaccination takes place at least ten days before you travel and that you have the vaccination card with you as evidence.

The date in my Yellow Fellow vaccination card has expired. What do I do?

Your vaccination is still valid. You would just need to have it annotated at a Health Clinic where such cards are issued.

I am a businessman, journalist, film-maker, entertainer or athlete travelling to Ghana. What type of visa do I require? Are there any special requirements?

The classification of visa you require for travel to Ghana is determined by the purpose of the visit, not the profession of the traveller. For more information on the type of visa you require or special requirements, please contact us.

What Visa does a Ghanaian require to travel to Bermuda?

You require a multiple entry Visa (transit, visitors, work, students etc.) or proof of residence or citizenship for the United Kingdom, United States or Canada.

I have a valid Ghanaian Passport and a second nationality. Do I require a Visa or a Dual Citizenship Card?

You do not require a Visa if you are entering and leaving Ghana on your Ghanaian passport. Further to the decision in Asare v The Attorney General, obtaining the Dual Citizenship Card is not mandatory.
